Christmas 2016

Members of the George Borrow Society will have their annual Christmas meal at the Hereford Arms, Gloucester Road, Brompton, London, on 3^rd December 2016, starting at 1 p.m.

Those attending should have let Trish know (and provided the £10 deposit).  The three course menu has been circulated (two courses £25.95, three £29.95).  More details closer to the time.

As a few members had difficulty in reaching the Hereford Arms last year, here’s a few tips:

1.  The pub is a 3 minute walk from Gloucester Road underground station which is on the district and circle lines.  There’s very regular underground trains from Victoria station (both coach and rail), and regular trains from Paddington (Praed street station, at the front of the railway station) on the circle line (you want one going via Victoria).

From Euston, King’s Cross and St. Pancras stations you generally would take a convenient route onto the south part of the district or circle lines.  Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street are on the circle line: just make sure you’re going the right way around.

There can be regular weekend engineering work, so check with Transport for London which also has maps and explains fares.

From Gloucester Road station (with Tesco’s in front of you on the opposite side of the road), turn right and walk about 100 yards (towards Hereford Square: you’ll see the greenery), and you’ll see the Hereford Arms on the same side as Tesco.

2.  The 49 bus (Battersea/Clapham Junction to White City) goes past Gloucester Road underground station and although a bit slower might suit some more than the underground.  All London buses are easy access, accept England concessionary cards etc.  Transport for London offer a journey planner if that won’t work for you.

The bus stops outside Gloucester Road tube station so follow the above directions.

3.  If you’re still stuck, you can always use Bing maps

Did you know?  The Hereford Arms was there when Borrow lived there, and he’d certainly have drunk in there.  However, the only anecdote we have of Borrow drinking in the area is when he and Robert Collinson (a neighbour) would sit in the garden quaffing ale.
