Portrait of George Borrow

The Church of St. Mary, West Brompton, Hereford Square, and George Borrow

This is a work in progress and may contain errors.  It will be updated as research continues.

Around September 1860, George Borrow, then 57, his wife Mary and his step-daughter Henrietta Clarke moved into 22 Hereford Square, Brompton.  As a middle-class Church of England family they would naturally attend a local church, and the question arises: which one?

As far as we know the Borrows didn’t own a carriage, and so would be likely to pick a near-by church.  The nearest at the time was St. Mary, West Brompton (now known as St. Mary the Boltons).  This would be a short walk down Gloucester Road, and then along the Old Brompton Road, turning into the Boltons.  It’s a gentle five minute stroll.

St. Stephen’s, a church much nearer Hereford Square, wasn’t built until 1867, and the parish church of Brompton, Holy Trinity, was much further away.

St. Mary’s had free seats, but the Borrows being well off, would have arranged to have reserved seats, for which they would have paid pew rent: a way to fund St. Marys which was less than 10 years old at the time.

The vicar at the time was Mayow Wyndell Mayow, who had just recently become vicar, having previously been vicar of Market Lavington, Wiltshire.  Mayow had authored some theological tracts, and was close to the Oxford Movement way of thinking.  Whilst not advocating ditching the Church of England and going back to the Pope, his ideas weren’t far off it.  Mary Borrow is thought to have been high church and would be in agreement with much that Mayow preached, Borrow would not, at least if Mayow preached what he clearly believed.

St. Mary’s and Hereford had a long relationship before the Borrow’s came.  The Rev. Hogarth Swale had funded the building of St. Marys and was the first incumbent: he’d married Emily Charlotte Gater of 19 Hereford Square.  Rev. Thomas Pearson, Swale’s successor, lived at 12 Hereford Square until 1852–55, and Rev. Nathanial Liberty, Pearson’s curate at St. Mary’s, lived at 27 Hereford Square 1864–67.

Quite a few of the Hereford Square residents had their children christened at St. Marys.

It’s probably worth pointing out that Mayow Wyndell Mayow ceased to be minister in 1867, citing “trouble in the parish.”  The trouble was almost certainly a clash of his pro-Tractarian views with those of a staunchly protestant parish.

In order to show that many Hereford Square people went to St. Marys over the early period, below are some rough transcriptions from the Parish Registers, 1850-66, 1866-77, 1877-89.  I’ve also included Seymour Place as part of the research on Sarah Oriel, as it’s possible the Borrows met Sarah via St. Marys.
